The project

NatureInternational aid
The MAHAKAM project aims to restore the mangrove ecosystem in the Mahakam delta on the island of Borneo. These mangroves, which act as natural barriers against tsunamis, are home to exceptional biodiversity and store five times more carbon than a conventional tree. Planète Urgence is also developing sustainable economic sectors such as aquaculture, and raising children's awareness to involve local communities in preserving their ecosystem.

Solution

MAHAKAM restores degraded mangroves by creating community nurseries, training local people in tree planting and ensuring ecological monitoring of rehabilitated areas. It develops sustainable activities such as aquaculture and the processing of local products by women. School workshops and public campaigns raise awareness of biodiversity, while participatory coastal governance strengthens cooperation between the villages of Mahakam and Adang.

Use of the money

The donations will fund the MAHAKAM project through:
- Conservation and reforestation of mangroves, including monitoring and protection of restored areas.
- Strengthening environmental awareness actions among students and teacher training, as well as supporting the certification of green schools, known as "Adiwiyata".
"Reconciling people and forests is not just about planting trees, it's about restoring meaning, links and autonomy to communities that are all too often forgotten.
