Solution
Habit'âge was born out of a deep conviction: housing is much more than just a roof over one’s head; it is a place for living, for connection, and for dignity for everyone, at every stage of life.
Habit’âge is guided by a fundamental value: the self-determination of older adults. Every older adult must be able to decide where to live and under what conditions they wish to age, with full citizenship, dignity, and peace of mind in a society that fosters social connections.
To combat substandard housing and social isolation, Habit’âge offers three solutions:
- The organization creates community-based senior housing by restoring dilapidated buildings in the heart of small towns, based on solidarity and cooperation to enable older adults to age with dignity, comfort, and social connection. Today, three such homes are open in Maine-et-Loire, housing 14 tenants and involving about thirty volunteers who help bring the common areas to life. Each year, the organization organizes dozens of shared experiences with other isolated seniors across the region.
- Habit’âge also organizes discussion workshops and awareness-raising sessions on housing to empower older adults to gain the knowledge they need to make informed, conscious, and free choices about their future living arrangements. More than 800 retirees have already benefited from this group support program, which is co-developed with the participants.
- Finally, the organization shares its expertise with public and private stakeholders, particularly in rural areas throughout France, through two capacity-building tracks: one focused on creating housing and the other on facilitating workshops to support housing choices.
