The project

AgingInclusion
There are 2 million isolated elderly people in France, and 600,000 residents in EHPAD. A third of them are in a deteriorated psychological state, and half take antidepressants. The suicide rate among the over 85s is three times higher than in the rest of the population. Faced with these alarming figures on the mental and cognitive health of our elders, Lire et Sourire proposes a simple and accessible solution: joyful, intergenerational read-alouds, to bring happiness to our elders and enable them to dream again.

Solution

The association organizes read-alouds in retirement homes: dynamic, regular and mostly collective, to create lasting social ties and stimulate the cognitive faculties of elderly residents.

By its accessibility and simplicity, read-alouds are the ideal tool for recreating human and intergenerational ties for our elders.

Use of the money

Experimented for four years in Auvergne-RhĂ´ne-Alpes, operational in more than 130 establishments, Lire et Sourire is currently rolling out this project throughout France by means of local branches associating volunteers, EHPAD professionals and a salaried team committed to changing the way people look at old age.
It's not easy when you're 95, and it's good for us. I can't see very well any more and we'd asked for some reading material, so we're very happy. It's good for us to see outsiders.
