Supporting the citizenship of an indigenous Cameroonian people

1 access to citizenship = 45 €

The project
International aidNature
Green Sanctuaries is helping 4 indigenous villages of the Baka people in Cameroon to gain access to citizenship. The absence of birth certificates and national identity cards makes them legally invisible, and prevents them from defending their rights in the face of abuse. The project aims to give them legal recognition and citizenship, by accompanying them through each administrative stage, raising their awareness and strengthening their ability to assert their rights and gain access to community forests.

Solution
Indigenous peoples are the best custodians of the forests. Access to citizenship is the first essential step to the recognition of all their other rights. - economic, cultural and environmental. It also makes it possible to protect the areas where traditional knowledge, closely linked to the forest, is transmitted, and to recognize their key role in the conservation of living organisms. We have identified 184 beneficiaries who will be supported throughout the process.
Use of the money
Donations will be used to fund all the steps involved in obtaining birth certificates: data entry, issuing certificates, defending cases in court.

"Green Sanctuaries is one of the very few projects to have both a social and an environmental approach. It's through this balance between protecting the environment, and particularly primary forests, and supporting local populations, that we'll be able to move the lines."
